Expatriates’ safety is govt’s first priority: Shama Obaed

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said ensuring the safety of Bangladeshi expatriates in the Middle East remains the government’s top priority amid the current regional conflict.

She made the remarks on Friday (March 20), while briefing reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after receiving the body of Mosharraf Hossain, the Bangladeshi killed in a missile strike in Saudi Arabia.

Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury and senior officials of the relevant ministries were also present.

Shama Obaed Islam said the government was working on a war footing to protect Bangladeshi nationals living in different Middle Eastern countries. All relevant state agencies, including the foreign ministry, remained actively engaged in the effort.

She said that, in line with the prime minister’s instructions, the safety of expatriates during the conflict was the government’s first priority.

Bangladeshi missions abroad, she added, were maintaining regular contact with expatriates and taking necessary steps to keep them safe.

The state minister said Bangladesh hoped the conflict would end soon and reiterated Dhaka’s preference for a peaceful resolution through diplomatic dialogue and negotiations.
